Research
My research follows two key steps: first, conducting competitive analysis to assess market offerings; second, engaging in user interviews to gain valuable insights into the first three years of parenting. This approach helps us better understand user needs and preferences.
Step 1: Competitive Analysis
STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES
SUMMARY
-
Very good setting options (users can change the color of an app, pick measurement units, and more).
-
The app has the most needed features for tracking baby activities.
-
Sweet spot ( magical time predictor that lets you know when your baby should nap).
-
A complicated way to export the report.
-
Expensive app.
-
Additional users can log into the app only using the same email.

Boasts a high level of complexity, yet it may not be accessible to everyone due to its cost.
Huckleberry
-
Great option to join the community and connect with others.
-
Wish list for the baby.
-
App can be connected with the Apple watch.
-
Additional users can have their own accounts.
-
Blog with interesting articles.
-
A complicated way to export the report.
-
Expensive app.
-
Additional users can log into the app only using the same email.
Offers a few distinctive and pleasant social features; however, its navigation is not user-friendly.

Glow Baby
-
Users can input the baby's allergies and blood type.
-
Under the "Medicine" section, there are numerous helpful and distinct categories.
-
The app offers extensive customization options through very good settings.
-
The app can be connected to the Alexa Voice Assistant.
-
Confusing navigation
-
UI can be improve
Provides extensive customization options, but the visual appeal may not suit everyone's taste.

Interviews over Zoom and in person
Who?
5 females of different ages & backgrounds
"With my first child, I had an awful daily routine, sleepless nights, no knowledge, no understanding of what to do and how to do it, no help, didn’t understand the feeding and sleeping needs of a child, and no schedule."
Olga, 33 years, 2 kids
"I was writing down everything on paper: their weight, food, and diaper schedule. I had a hard time potty training them."
Tina, 48 years, twins
"My biggest challenge is to stay organized, maintain a consistent schedule, and align both of our schedules."
Snow, 37 years, 2 kids
Key findings
Stress for New Parents
Overwhelming lack of knowledge and uncertainties contribute significantly to stress. The need for emotional support and practical guidance is evident.
Time Management Problems
Parents struggle to find dedicated time for self-care amid demanding baby care responsibilities. Organizational skills and time management are areas where parents express a desire for improvement.
Health Management Complexities
Doctor's appointments and medication schedules pose logistical challenges.
Parents are seeking streamlined solutions for efficient health tracking.

Define
By incorporating key findings from research and considering the implications for design, I crafted a comprehensive feature set for the app.

After implementing the feature set, I created an app map to visually organize and illustrate how different functionalities connect. My focus was on clarity and simplicity, making the app more user-friendly and enhancing its overall usability.

Based on research, new parents prioritize setting up feeding and sleeping routines to reduce stress. If they have multiple children, they want to manage routines for all in one app with ease. My main goal for the MVP was to implement these features, and here are the users flows.

Early stage design
After developing comprehensive user flows, I focused on figuring out the important things users need for a good experience. I used these ideas to create simple sketches, exploring different design options that match what users want.

Testing
While designing low-fidelity wireframes, I encountered a challenge: determining the easiest and most convenient method for users to add another child. To identify the optimal solution, I conducted first-click usability testing.

Feeding time screen iteration process

Initial design was iterated based on stakeholder feedback: so users to be able to see the time they spend on each side.
Sleeping time screen iteration process
Although stakeholders were satisfied with the design iteration #1, user testing revealed that adjusting start and end times was confusing for users.
Based on prior feedback, I redesigned the start/edit time buttons in the final design to allow users to adjust the time more easily when needed.

The initial design was iterated upon because stakeholders did not approve the placement of the timer at the bottom. They desired a cleaner look and requested to have the timer set alongside the addition of a sleep timer, combining both functionalities into one.

The design underwent iteration #1 following user testing, during which participants were tasked with setting a timer for the baby's nap. A significant 95% of users were unable to complete the task successfully, prompting the need for adjustments and improvements.
Based on previous feedback, I added a tab at the top in the final design that divides tasks into two sections, making it easier for users to complete them.

While crafting mid-fidelity wireframes, I engaged in numerous iterations, refining the designs in response to feedback from stakeholders.

Visual design
After finishing the wireframes, I focused on visual design, choosing brand-aligned colors and readable fonts to enhance user engagement. The moodboard set the tone, balancing functionality and aesthetics for a better user experience.
Moodboard

Brand-aligned colors
I chose orange for its warmth and energy, and turquoise for its calming effect. Together, they create a balanced, welcoming, and soothing experience for the app.
